SYTYCD Season 8 - The Top 6 Perform
Posted by nobody on August 3, 2011

So You Think You Can Dance continued tonight as the Top 6 danced for America's votes.

Guest judge tonight is Christina Applegate and Lil' C is also on the judging panel.

Melanie & Twitch

Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographers: Napoleon & Tabitha

Lil' C thought it was a little rough at the beginning but that she picked it up in the end. I think Christina loves Melanie. She gave Melanie nice comments. Mary agreed with Lil' C. Nigel said Melanie is good at everything. I felt like Melanie was trying to act tough but I wasn't sold. I thought she was hitting it alright but I didn't feel the swagger. With all the props, it also made it feel like a school play.

Sasha & Kent

Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Tyce DiOrio

Christina loved it. She said that dancing isn't about the perfect technique or tricks but about pooring your emotion into the performance like Sasha just did and that's what she loves about her. The other judges said similar things and they loved it too. I felt that it was disappointing to have two Contemporary dancers and not amaze us with their technique. I think that this was a routine that could have been performed well by non-technical dancers. But I thought they did a good job with what they were given.

Janette & Marko

Style: Paso Doble
Choreographer: Dmitry Chaplin

Mary thought that he did a good job even though he lost his footing from time to time. She liked the part where he used Janette like a cape and threw her over his shoulder. Nigel was left a little cold. The other judges gave lukewarm comments. I thought it was an interesting choice of music. It was very mellow and seemed an odd choice for a Paso Doble. With him loosing his footing and it seemed like they were loosing their hand holds a few times, it felt a bit sloppy. But I loved seeing Janette back on the show. She definitely tried to create chemistry with Marko whenever she looked at him.

Ellenore & Tadd

Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh

Nigel thought there were some interesting positions in the routine. He thought it was interesting but he would have liked to see more dancing. Lil' C felt like they were just going through the movements and that they could have put more performance into it. Christina thought that Tadd did a great job for a bboy. Mary thought Sonya was brave for using the chandelier as a prop. I thought Ellenore was great. I don't know how much dancing Tadd actually did. I thought him hanging off and spinning on the chandelier was maybe a little crazy and not in a good way.

Jaimie & Ricky

Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Dee Caspary

Judges generally liked it. Lil' C gave his usual tongue twister critique. He gave Ricky credit for dancing with the props in his hands. Christina said that she wanted Ricky to give it a little more conviction. She said that would make him an even better dancer than he already is. Then, it looked like she was reading Lil' C's notes. Does Lil' C pre-write those things? Nigel thought that Ricky still dances high but he thinks his lines are amazing. Lady Gaga must be happy she's not on the show this week. There seems to be an extra amount of props used this week. I think this is the first routine that I actually liked. I thought Jaimie was great. I agree with what Christina said about Ricky. His dancing feels a bit too laid back.

Caitlynn & Pasha

Style: Samba
Choreographer: Dmitry Chaplin

Christina seemed to love it. The other judges generally liked it but they said Caitlynn doesn't need to try so hard to be sexy because she already is. Mary thought her technique was good. Nigel and Mary didn't like her face pulling. Lil' C compared her effort to a cannon ball dive as opposed to a swan dive. Caitlynn always dances big. I think if she toned it down a tiny tiny bit, it could help her technique. I thought this was good. I thought her big movements helped accentuate those sexy hip movements she had going on.

Sasha & Ricky

Style: Waacking
Choreographer: ?

Mary thought it was kind of slow. Apparently someone did Waacking in the auditions and Mary liked that better. I think the judges were underwhelmed by it. Nigel liked Sasha in this. I also thought Sasha was great in this. She had this kind of diva-ish look and attitude and she danced it really cleanly. I think Ricky was over shadowed by Sasha.

Melanie & Tadd

Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Spencer Liff

The judges kept complimenting Melanie's solo, which felt kind of unfair to the other contestants. Oh yeah, I forgot, the dancers are also performing solos in between these routines. Christina complimented Tadd's technique for being a bboy and showed off her ballet vocabulary and knowledge. Nigel loved Melanie in this and said that Tadd not sucking next to Melanie was a compliment. I thought it was a good routine but I didn't get overly excited about it.

Caitlynn & Marko

Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh

The judges loved it. Nigel said this was Caitlynn best routine since the Argentine Tango. Christina said Caitlynn was great but really loved Marko. The other judges loved it as well. I thought it was a great routine. I thought Marko was fantastic. I thought Marko actually made Caitlynn look bad in comparison. When dancing side-by-side, Marko looked much sharper.

Overall Thoughts

I thought it was an underwhelming show. I actually felt bad for Christina Applegate to have to come up with critiques for these routines. I felt like she was struggling to find compliments but I thought she did a good job. I thought Tadd had great musicality in his solo. Melanie's solo was also great. Those were my favourite solos.

Also, I didn't see the elimination show last week so I don't know who was in the bottom 4 but I felt the wrong people went home in the overall group.
