So You Think You Can Dance continues tonight with the final performance show of the season.
Guest judges tonight are Kenny Ortega and Katie Holmes.
Melanie & Marko
Style: Disco
Choreographer: Doriana Sanchez
Kenny and Katie compared it to Saturday Night Fever and they liked it. Mary thought they struggled with the lift and that they needed to take it to another level. Nigel thought it was a bit of a struggle. I agree with Mary and Nigel. Marko seems to struggle with lifts. I personally didn't like the song choice. I thought Melanie was a bit better than Marko because she looked like she was having more fun.
Sasha & Mark
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Katie liked it. Mary gave Sasha a scream. Mary and Nigel loved Sasha's determination. Nigel said she's always been a warrior and she's fighting to the end. I thought it was a good routine and I thought they danced it great. I didn't find anything particularly amazing but they executed it well.
Tadd & Joshua
Style: Krump
Choreographer: Lil' C
Mary thought he did a good job. She said the song and called "Hustle Hard" and he's been hustling hard since the beginning of the show. Nigel said not a bad job but not as strong as he would have liked it. The guest judges liked it. I thought Joshua was hitting it bigger than Tadd and Joshua had much more of a gangsta face on. I think it was closer to Joshua's style than Tadd's, though.
Melanie & Robert
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
The judges really liked it. Cat tried to convince Kenny to give Melanie a job, which I thought felt a bit awkward because it put Kenny on the spot. I thought Melanie overacted a bit but I thought it was a very good routine.
Sasha & Marko
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Spencer Liff
Kenny thought Marko did a good acting job. She said Sasha went from warrior princess to sophisticated woman. He said he doesn't think there's anything Sasha can't do. Mary thought they were tremendous. Nigel was a little disappointed. He would like to see a bit stronger characters for Broadway. I knew Nigel wouldn't like it because it wasn't perfect. I thought it was entertaining. For Broadway, I thought Marko was better than Sasha because she was a little bit too laid back. It did have that lack of polish feeling. The lift, again, was bad and looked sluggish.
Melanie's Solo
Melanie did a slow intense Contemporary solo. I thought it was too short. I wanted to see more (because it was looking really good).
Marko's Solo
Marko danced a fast Contemporary solo that looked really fluid.
Sasha & Tadd
Style: Cha-Cha
Choreographer: Mark Ballas
Katie thinks they are great dancers. Mary didn't like it. She thought they were missing hand connections. She thought Sasha faired a bit better than Tadd. Nigel agreed with Mary. Kenny thought they should shrug it off and come back stronger. I thought Sasha did a good job. I felt like Tadd pulled Sasha down in this routine. I think Tadd being shorter made it difficult for them.
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Sandra?
The judges loved it. I missed it. Ughh... it sounds like I missed the best routine of the night.
Tadd's Solo
Tadd did a breakdancing solo. It seemed really short.
Melanie & Tadd
Style: Jazz? Broadway?
Choreographer: ?
The judges loved this, too. I thought it was good but I didn't love it as much as the judges.
Sasha's Solo
Sasha did a Contemporary solo, which I thought was really good.
Melanie & Melanie
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
The judges loved it. Kenny was intrigued by the story they were telling. Nigel said the girls should join dance companies after the show. I thought it was a beautiful choreography by Stacey Tookey and they danced it wonderfully.
Tadd & Marko
Style: Stepping
Choreographer: Chuck Maldonado
Katie said she liked them. Mary liked the routine. Nigel thought that a girl will win. I thought they were really unsynchronized and the movements were sloppy. I don't know if a girl will win but I think one of the girls should win.
Final Thoughts
I'm disappointed that I missed possibly the best routine of the night. I thought the show was kind of average. I think the dancers are amazing in their own styles but have a bit of trouble outside of it. So, now that the season is over, I can say that I didn't like this season as much as last season. I think by the number Emmy nominations, it really shows how good last season really was.
