So You Think You Can Dance continued tonight as the Top 8 just danced for America's votes.
The guest judges this week are Rob Marshall and Lady Gaga.
Sasha & Pasha
Style: Quickstep
Mary thought Sasha pulled it off. Mary thought she did some really good things but she thought that she could also improve on some things. Nigel thought her upper body was a bit stiff but thought that she still did a good job. I agree with both Nigel and Mary. She had this kind of grooving movement in there that I'm not sure if I liked it or thought it was odd for a Quickstep.
Caitlynn & Ivan
Style: Hip-Hop
Mary loved Ivan and thought Caitlynn did a good job. Nigel thought that Ivan dances in the pocket more and that Caitlynn could get down a bit more. Again, I agree with Mary and Nigel. It was really great to see Ivan back on the show and it would have been really hard for any girl to keep up with Ivan.
Jordan & Ade
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Tyce DiOrio
Nigel thinks that Jordan's legs go on forever. Mary was also amazed by Jordan's flexibility. I thought Jordan did a great job. But I think I've only seen Jordan do Jazz / Contemporary and I'd like to see her do something else.
Melanie & Neil
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Mandy Moore
The judges gave it a standing ovation. Melanie is Lady Gaga's favourite dancer. Mary loved it as well. Mary mentioned the leap that Melanie did which I also thought was crazy fearless of her.
Anya & Ricky
Style: Jive
Mary mentioned the laboured lift which was also something I was going to mention. Nigel also mentioned it. He said it looked like he was carrying a slab of meat. Mary thought he missed the double bounce at the beginning but picked it up later on as the music picked up. Most of the judges thought he could have been down into the floor more. The judges also thought that his smile really lit up the stage. I thought he looked like he was having fun which is really important in the Jive, I think. His technique wasn't the best but it wasn't terrible.
Style: Lyrical Hip-Hop
Choreographers: Napoleon & Tabitha
Mary liked it and she thought Jess has grown a lot. Nigel thought that Jess is listening to what the judges are saying, specifically mentioning what Neil Patrick Harris said last week about him watching his facial expressions. Lady Gaga didn't care for the prop (flower) but she enjoyed his performance. I thought the dancing was great. At first I felt like they lacked chemistry but then I thought maybe they were supposed to because the routine was about them not getting along.
Style: Jazz?
Choreography: Mandy Moore
The judges liked it. They thought Tadd had a lot of style. Apparently, Lauren hit him in the face which I didn't see and he lost his hat which was obvious. I thought him doing the moves without the hat looked a bit awkward but I thought he made the best of it.
Allison & Marko
Style: Contemporary
Choreography: Sonya Tayeh
The judges gave them a standing ovation and Lady Gaga and Marko's mom was crying. Marko dedicated the routine to his mom. He said he wasn't the best kid and that he was sorry to his mom and that he loved her. Rob mentioned how amazing Allison was, w00t. Marko is Mary's favourite dancer. I think Marko is a fantastic Contemporary dancer but I admit my attention was constantly drawn to Allison. Great routine by Sonya and the dancers did a fabulous job with it.
Caitlynn & Tadd
Style: Foxtrot
Mary thought there could have been a lot of improvement. Overall, the judges didn't love it. I also thought it could have been better.
Marko & Ricky
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographers: Napoleon & Tabitha
Mary gave it a standing ovation. She loved it. Nigel thought Ricky is still dancing a little high. Lady Gaga liked it but she thought the props made it a bit contrived. Rob thought they were great especially considering they're Contemporary dancers. I thought they did a good job. I thought Marko gave it a little more fight than Ricky.
Jordan & Jess
Style: Rumba
Choreographer: Jason Gilkison
Lady Gaga didn't agree with Jason Gilkison's interpretation of the song but thought the dancers did a good job with what they were given. Mary didn't think their International Rumba technique was good. I don't know International Rumba but I liked it so I thought the judges were a little harsh on them.
Melanie & Sasha
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
The judges gave them a standing ovation. Lady Gaga threw her shoe at the stage. I think I means that she liked it. Lady Gaga then threw her other shoe at Sonya. This was destined to be amazing. Sonya Tayeh plus two fierce Contemporary girls will equal an amazing routine. I thought Melanie's technique was better (more consistent) than Sasha but I love both these girls.
Overall Thoughts
I don't think the show was as good as last week's but I think more people may have been out of their element? Melanie had the best night but both of her routines were in her comfort zone. Right now, I would say Melanie, Sasha, Tadd and Marko are the frontrunners to make the finale.
