SYTYCD Canada Season 3 Ep11 - The Top 18 Perform
Posted by nobody on September 6, 2010

LIVE BLOG -- So You Think You Can Dance Canada continues this week as the Top 18 dance for Canada's votes.

Judges this week are Jean-Marc Genereux, Tré Armstrong, Blake McGrath and guest judge Melissa Williams.

Jean-Marc discussed about how Canada needs to vote. Maybe they would if the show didn't end at 11pm when their main audience is going to bed. Oh yeah, school starts tomorrow!

Amanda & Denys

Style: Quickstep
Choreographers: Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-01

My Thoughts
I really liked it. I don't know Quickstep technique so I can't exactly comment on it but I thought the girl is supposed to arch her back more. But other than that, I thought they were very convincing and energetic. Quickstep is usually quick and sometimes seems frantic but I liked how Denys slows it down at the transitions to put the focus back on the dancers.

Janick & Shavar

Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographer: Luther Brown
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-02

My Thoughts
I thought Shavar was great. I didn't think Janick was given enough to do. It felt like she was posing a lot. I feel like it's unfortunate for Janick because she was great in the first week and it feels like other girls like Amanda, Nathalie and Danielle are passing her now, but I still like her and I hope she will really get to show what she can do next week.

Julia & Jesse

Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-03

My Thoughts
I agree with the judges. Wow, they actually gave critique. I thought it lacked fluidity and there was kind of a lack of connection.

Charlene & Jeff

Style: Hustle
Choreographers: Maria Torres
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-04

My Thoughts
I admit they nailed all the tricks this week but they lacked energy and style. Basically, they nailed the tricks but between the tricks they weren't that great. I felt like they were being praised for the choreography. But a good job on nailing the tricks.

Nathalie & Mackenzie

Style: Cha-Cha
Choreographer: Gustavo Vargas
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-05

My Thoughts
I actually agree with Melissa Williams. I think Nathalie could have had more (or at least more sensual) hip movements. Mackenzie did alright. The thing about this couple is that they have good chemistry and they are good performers. They know how to make those picture moments.

Danielle & Sebastien

Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Sabrina Matthews
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-06

My Thoughts
Another great piece of choreography by Sabrina Matthews. I thought they did a great job. Their technique was great and they were emotionally invested, so yeah, it was great. I disagree with Melissa Williams about their facial expressions being too much. I think for the subject of an eating disorder, a lot of external emotions need to be shown.

Kirsten & Jera

Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographer: Sho-Tyme
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-07

My Thoughts
I think they got lucky that they got this style of Hip-Hop. It was more of a groove style Hip-Hop than a technical Hip-Hop. I thought they did a decent job. I thought Jera got it better than Kirsten. Kirsten still looks like a Ballet / Contemporary dancer trying to do other styles of dance but I guess she is more foreign to this style than he is since he's a former B-boy.

Claudia & Edgar

Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sean Cheesman
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-08

My Thoughts
I think they said this routine was a Jazz Maybe somebody with Jazz knowledge can comment but it looked like a Contemporary or Lyrical Jazz or whatever to me. Anyway, it seemed like Claudia had more commitment in this routine than she did her own solo last week. She didn't have the technique, which is understandable. I also think that Edgar was better in this than his own style. I don't think Claudia is faking her style but maybe Edgar is. He might just be one of those multi-style trained dancers. But I don't see him as being amazing in any one style, that's why I don't love him, to answer Jean-Marc's question.

Kloé & Jonathan

Style: West Coast Swing
Choreographer: Benji Schwimmer
Phone #: 1-877-9-SPIN-09

My Thoughts
That was kind of odd to me. It looked kind of like a Lyrical West Coast Swing.

My favourites this week were Danielle & Sebastian and Amanda & Denys.

EDIT:
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that Leah Miller got nominated for another Gemini this year She won last year. The show also got nominations for another 3 awards I think they said, including for best show or whatever it's called, so congrats to So You Think You Can Dance Canada for their nominations!
