So, apparently,
So You Think You Can Dance Canada has already started and I missed it. But, I was able to watch the episodes I missed before the Top 20 will be chosen tonight (at least the airing of it - the Top 20 has already been chosen and the Top 20 show already taped).
I will just comment on some of the auditions.
Toronto Auditions
First up was
Amanda Cleghorn, 18 yr old Contemporary dancer from Mississauga, ON. I'm not a huge fan of hers. I didn't like her transitions.
Jenna Speir, 18 yr old Contemporary dancer from London, ON. I really liked her. Her dancing has similar qualities to
Lauren Froderman.
Ajamu "Freezy" Eversley, 24 yr old Krumper from Mississauga, ON. I really liked his aggression / conviction.
Yana Gorodjanova, 19 yr old Ballroom dancer from Woodbridge, ON. Melanie B beat her out for the last spot last year. I wasn't impressed by her.
Sarah Vance, 22 yr old cheerleader / Contemporary dancer from Waterloo, ON. I liked her. There's a nice flow to her dancing. I don't like pasted smiles either but I don't agree with Luther about her smiling. She smiled big during the times that she was happy. The big smile wasn't on throughout the entire solo.
Rodrigo Basurto, 25 yr old Hip-Hop dancer from Toronto, ON. He took some Ballet classes to prepare for the show this year. I wasn't super impressed with him.
Shavar Blackwood, 24 yr old Hip-Hop dancer from Toronto, ON. He also took Ballet classes to prepare for the show this year. I wasn't super impressed with him either.
Christian "Cee" Ancheta aka unitard guy, 22 yr old from Kanata, ON. I really enjoyed his solo. Very energetic with a lot of tricks and personality to the routine.
Caroline Holody, 18 yr Latin Ballroom dancer from Brampton, ON. I really liked her. She has that commanding presence that all good Ballroom dancers should have.
Alvin Collantes, 20 yr old Contemporary dancer from Mississauga, ON. I really liked him. He did a quirky routine but you can tell he has nice lines and extensions.
Jonathan "JR" Roumain, 23 yr old Hip-Hop dancer from Montreal, QC. Apparently, he's a former figure skater. I really liked him. Good performance.
Nisheeth Proshanti, 22 yr old Bollywood dancer from Toronto, ON. I enjoyed her solo.
Jesse Weafer, 24 yr old Contemporary dancer from Aurora, ON. I thought he was OK. Reminds me of how I feel about Nico.
Nina Strazzulla, 20 yr old Acro / Contemporary dancer from Winona, ON. I thought she was pretty good. Needs more artistic qualities to her choreographer. A little bit too generic.
Jennifer Abbey, 23 yr old Hip-Hop dancer from Toronto, ON. I liked her. She hits it pretty hard.
Andrew Chung, 23 yr old B-boy / Hip-Hop dancer from Toronto, ON. I really liked him. Thought his solo was great.
Graham Goodhall, 24 yr old Hip-Hop dancer from Etobicoke, ON. I thought it was a pretty good audition.
Lisa Frias, 24 yr old Contemporary dancer from Caledon, ON. This is the third time trying out. She's a pretty good dancer but nothing that stands out about her. Again, a little bit generic.
Patrizia Gianforcaro, 24 yr old from Woodbridge, ON. I really liked her, she had some Afro in there, which she did really well, then she switched to Contemporary, which I thought she also did really well.
Overall, I was really impressed with Toronto. Toronto represent!
Calgary Auditions
Jo Roy, 18 yr old Ballet / Hip-Hop dancer from Edmonton, AB. She did a Hip-Hop en pointe, which was really interesting to watch. I liked her.
Christina Schell, 19 yr old Contemporary dancer from Langley, BC. I love you Stacey Tookey but I have to disagree about her smile. This is what I call a pasted smile which I'm not a fan of. Plus, as Stacey said, she doesn't have the best technique.
Kevin Howe, 21 yr old Contemporary dancer from Ottawa, ON. Apparently, he lost 50 lbs. I really liked him. I agree with Stacey about him having good transitions, which is something I really like in a dancer.
Jera Wolfe, 19 yr old B-boy / Ballet dancer from Inverness, NS. He was pretty good but not amazing or anything.
Arik Pipestem, 19 yr old Native dancer from Tsuu t'ina Nation, AB. I really enjoyed his performance. It was really cool.
Julia Harnett, 25 yr old Ballet / Ballroom dancer from Calgary, AB.
Rufino Rodriguez, 23 yr old Ballroom dancer from Calgary, AB.
I thought Julia's Ballroom dancing was OK. I hope her Ballet is better. I really liked Rufino. He was definitely a lot better than Julia for me.
Shelaina Anderson, 19 yr old Contemporary dancer from Edmonton, AB. Last year, she got cut during the group auditions because she want to bed early while her group stayed up late. She said she won't make that mistake again this year. I really like her. I hope she will take the competition seriously this year like Tara-Jean did. And I hope she can do other styles.
Edgar Gilbert-Reyes, 22 yr old dancer from Calgary, AB. He has worked with
Blake McGrath in the past. I was really impressed with his audition.
Danielle Gardner, 20 yr old Contemporary dancer from Surrey, BC. Danielle auditioned last year. She had lung problems but she got some medication that's allowing her to breathe better. I think I liked her audition better last year. At least her audition wasn't just generic dancing.
Overall, I thought the Calgary auditions were pretty good.
East Coast Auditions
Yuliya Zavadska, 28 yr old Ballroom dancer from Vaughan, ON.
Sharone Levit, 27 yr old Ballroom dancer from Vaughan, ON.
I thought they were pretty good.
Janaye Upshaw, 18 yr old Tap dancer from Oshawa, ON. I loved her. She didn't give an audition, she gave a performance.
Overall, I wasn't impressed with the east coast auditions.
Vancouver Auditions
Kirsten Wicklund, 19 year old Ballet / Contemporary dancer from Vancouver, BC. She's obviously a very well trained dancer and a cute girl. I want to love her but I don't... yet. She lacks musicality or is unable to combine the dancing with the music so it feel generic even though she has some interesting moves.
Juliana Semenova, 19 yr old Latin Ballroom dancer from Vancouver, BC. I really liked her. Not a fan of the hair and heavy eye make-up, though. Makes her look kind of trashy.
Jeff Mortensen, 21 yr old Contemporary dancer from Edmonton, AB. Not a fan of the random back-flips. I agree with Luther, could have had more dancing.
Nathalie Heath, 23 yr old Contemporary dancer from Surrey, BC. She tried out in the previous two seasons. I'm still not impressed by her.
Jonathan Arsenault, 25 yr old Contemporary dancer from Kitchener, ON. I think I liked him last year and I like him this year.
Dianne Doan, 19 yr old Contemporary dancer from Abbotsford, BC. Cute girl, but I think her technique could use some work.
Sasha Kozak, 25 yr old Contemporary dancer from North Battleford, SK. I thought his audition was frantic which made it look like his technique was lacking.
Karolynn Fisher, 19 yr old Contemporary dancer from Abbotsford, BC. Another little cutie but she seemed to be lacking some passion.
Hani Abaza, 25 yr old Contemporary dancer from Ottawa, ON. I wasn't really impressed with his audition.
Montreal Auditions
Claudia Primeau, 25 yr old Ballroom dancer from Montreal, QC. Claudia is Francis' girlfriend. Francis came out to partner her for her audition. Francis is better than I remember. Or maybe he just wasn't very good at solos. She's a pretty good dancer but seems to lack that commanding presence. Francis has it and stole the show from her.
Jessie Mineau, 20 yr old Ballroom dancer from Trois-Rivieres, QC.
Phil Szopko, 20 yr old Ballroom dancer from Boucherville, QC.
Jessie is Vincent Desjardin's former partner. They were pretty good.
Yonni Fournier, 26 yr old Salsa dancer from Montreal, QC. Yonni tried out the two previous years. He's a really good Salsa dancer.
Denys Drozdyuk, 24 yr old Ballroom / Contemporary dancer from Toronto, ON. I thought he was great in both styles. He had a lot of stage presence as well. I think he's my favourite so far.
Sebastian Mersch, 20 yr old Contemporary dancer from Toronto, ON. I really liked him last year and I really like him now. He kind of reminds me of
Billy Bell. My favourite part of his audition was when he stopped then turned his head and gave a little smile.
Chantal Watt, 22 yr old Highland / Contemporary dancer from Brampton, ON. Chantal is 7-time Canadian Highland dance champion. She auditioned in the Contemporary style. I thought she was kind of mechanical so maybe it was more half Ballet and half Contemporary.
Amelia Levesque Demers, 30 yr old Belly Dancer from Nicolet, QC. The isolated movements she did were excellent, not just the breast but also the waist / hip movements.
Mike Keane, 22 yr old Irish Dancer from Montreal, QC. Mike has been the Eastern Canadian Irish Dance Champion for 7 consecutive years. I thought he was very good at what he does.
Justin Jackson, 20 yr old Tap Dancer from Montreal, QC. I really liked him last year and I really like him now. Just an amazing Tap dancer.
Sarah Steben, 20 yr old Hip-Hop dancer from Montreal, QC. I really liked her.
Jenny Dailey, 21 yr old Contemporary dance from Montreal, QC. I feel bad for Jenny because she will be compared to her sister. I think she made a mistake in looking more like her sister this year. If I were her, I would have did everything I could to separate myself from Jayme-Rae.
Luca "Lazylegz" Patuelli, 25 yr old B-boy from Montreal, QC. He was amazing. I was surprised at how good he was. He is such an inspiration.
The Finals
The first dance style the dancers needed to learn was a Hip-Hop routine by Luther Brown. Damn, it was fast!
They were extremely disappointed in Contemporary dancer Kirsten in the Hip-Hop choreography. Amanda Cleghorn and Jonathan Arsenault apparently did well. Ballroom dancer Phil wasn't very good. Jenny Daley did a passable job. Hip-Hop dancer Andrew did a good job. Kloe, Sabastien, Denys, Charlene, Jera, Sharone and Yuliya also got a passing grade. Luca "Lazylegs" also made it through. Janick got high praise from all the judges. Luther said she did his routine the most justice.
Next was the Theatre round choreographed by Sean Cheesman.
Amanda again got high praise from all the judges except Sean. Sean said she was just OK. Kirsten got a no from 4 judges but Blake convinced Sean Cheesman to let her move on. She obviously has to pull up for the next round or she's gone. Shavar did not impress and had to dance for his life. Jera, Jesse, Janick, Francois, Katie and Shane got passing grades. Tapper Justin forgot the choreography and came up with his own and got a pass. Sasha is injured but gets a pass. Luca gave a inspirational and emotional performance that got a standing ovation from everybody. Tré was crying and there were a lot more tears in the audience.
Next was the Ballroom round choreographed by Jean-Marc and France. It was a pretty fast Jive.
Ballroom dancers Phil and Denys made it through. Yonni got a passing grade. MacKenzie and Amelia Randal made it through. Amelia auditioned last year and I remember really liking her. Apparently, Kirsten did a decent job on the Jive. Danielle, Francois, Yana, Jeff, Charlene and Kevin made it through. Jenny got a pass as well. Janick made it through also.
Now for the group choreography round. Each group gets a song and they have to choreograph something to it.
A group containing Shelaina apparently did bad and she was one of the bad ones and had to dance for her life.
A group containing Janick did a good job.
A group containing Shavar, Kirsten, Yuliya and Jonathan did OK but Shavar caused some drama by saying some bad things about some of his group members on camera behind their backs and the judges called him out on it.
A group containing Juliette was bad and Juliette got cut. Phil quit because he doesn't feel like he's ready for the show. He said he wants to train more and come back next year.
I don't understand what could have made Shelaina so terrible in her group because her solo was beautiful.
And Last is the Contemporary round.
Blake wasn't super impressed with Kirsten but he gave her a pass. Nathalie made it. Denys made it. All the judges seemed to love him. Yonni impressed all the judges as well. Jesse, Amanda, Jerone(?), Yana, Edgar, Nina, Rafino(?) and Carelna(?) also made it through. Sasha had to quit because of injury but the judges said he could come back next year straight to the Finals. Hani and Jeff made it through. Bre made it through. She is also a bit injured. I don't know who she is but she looked good. Jenny barely made it through. Janick made it through but Blake was a little disappointed by what he saw from her. Jonathan made it through but got a no from Blake. Alvin, Julia, Charlene, Alexandra, Kloe, Kevin, Jo and Danielle all made it through. Aaron, Shane, Moses and Sabastien made it through.
Up next, who makes the Top 20? Find out tonight... in 5 mins...
