SYTYCD Season 6 Ep17 - The Top 12 Perform
November 25, 2009

So You Think You Can Dance continued last night last as the Top 12 danced for America's votes.

The theme of the pre-performance video clips was, "What are you going to miss most about your partner?"

Ellenore & Ryan - Lindy-Hop
I think I missed the part where they said what they missed about each other. Judges loved it. Nigel said Ryan was dancing into the floor and the bounce. I think it was Mary that said that Ellenore hasn't taken a wrong step in this competition. I thought they didn't like their Krump. What about the step she took on her dress in the Argentine Tango? (haha)

My Thoughts: It was OK. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of the Lindy-Hop as a performance dance. I probably wouldn't mind doing a Lindy-Hop, though. Looks fun.

Kathryn & Legacy - Jazz, choreographed by Sonya Tayeh.
Legacy is going to miss Kathryn helping him with his body. Umm...he means his technique. Kathryn is going to miss that Legacy always helps them get into character before each performance.

Adam loved the choreography and loved that Sonya used b-boy movements for Legacy. Nigel said that it was one of his favourite routines of the season. He thought Kathryn was sexy without being overly sexy. He said during Vegas, he didn't think Legacy showed a lot of musicality but that's all changed now.

My Thoughts: I thought it was an excellently choreographed routine. Sonya allowed each person to show off their strengths. I liked it a lot. It was interesting.

Karen & Victor - Argentine Tango, choreographed by Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin.
Victor likes being with Karen because she's been on the hot tamale train twice. I forget what Karen said about Victor.

Adam liked it. Mary was pleasantly surprised by Victor. Nigel liked the outfits. He liked Victor's upper body but thought he was sticking out his bum too much. He liked Karen. He thought together they were "magical".

My Thoughts: It wasn't one of the best Argentine Tangos I've seen but it was decent. I thought it had poor flow. They really got into the characters. I thought Victor was especially good with that.

Mollee & Nathan - Hip-Hop to "Ring-A-Ling" by Black Eyed Peas, choreographed by Jamal Sims.
Nathan is going to miss Mollee's laugh. Mollee's going to miss Nathan's random noises and sayings that does.

I forgot what Adam said but I think he had issues with it. Mary thought it picked up steam as it went along. She thought there were some bobbles and some things could have been hit harder but she really enjoyed it. Nigel said he thought they were both really good dancers but he thought it was dance schoolish.

My Thoughts: I don't understand why they don't have a Hip-Hop judge on the panel. When I disagree with the judges on Hip-Hop critique, I don't know if I'm wrong or they're wrong. Anyway, I don't think this was as bad as they said it was. I thought Nathan was hitting it pretty hard. Mollee was OK. For them to praise Randi last season and rag on these guys leaves me confused.

Noelle & Russell - Samba to "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira.
Noelle's going to miss Russell's laid back personality. He's always telling her things are going to be OK or something. Russell's going to miss Noelle's affection.

Adam enjoyed it but he thought it was a little too nice. He didn't think it was dirty enough. Mary thought they weren't into the floor enough but he thought the performance was there. Nigel said Noelle needs to be more sexual. I'm not really sure what he said to Russell but I think he said something about his Samba Rolls weren't good.

My Thoughts: I pretty much agree with what Mary and Nigel said here. I disagree with Adam. I don't think a Samba is supposed to be dirty, not in a Dancehall kind of way.

Ashleigh & Jakob - Lyrical Jazz to "Time Flies", choreographed by Sonya Tayeh.
Ashleigh will miss Jakob's friendship. Jakob doesn't have the words to say how much he's going to miss Ashleigh.

Adam thought it was so beautiful he didn't know what to say. But he doesn't want Jakob to every where those pants again. He said Ashleigh has really grown and she didn't look like a Ballroom dancer. Mary said Jakob is technically amazing and she will miss this partnership the most. She said they have great chemistry. Nigel said that he lied earlier and that this was his favourite routine. He professed his love for Sonya's work.

My Thoughts: Jakob's technique is just amazing. If this show was who has the best technique, Jakob would win hands down. Ashleigh was pretty good. I really liked this just from being mesmerized by Jakob's technique alone. I disagree with Mary in saying that they have chemistry. Maybe they have it offstage but not on stage. Not for me, anyway. For me, it mostly because of Jakob. He doesn't show his emotions on stage well. For certain routines like Jazz or Standard Ballroom it doesn't matter as much because those are mostly about the dancing but for things like an emotional Contemporary or pretty much anything that requires him to convey some emotion. He needs to put a little more soul into his performance for those types of routines.

Ellenore & Ryan - Broadway to "Razzle Dazzle" from Chicago Musical (?)
Adam thought they nailed it. He thought Ryan was great but Ellenore was a rock star. Mary thought Ryan really doug in and got into the character. She thinks that Ellenore is unique and that she's the it girl. Nigel thought the choreography was great and they put their characters upon that.

My Thoughts: I loved that look that Ryan gave at the end. I really liked their performance. That move that Ellenore did with her feet in the air once again shows off her amazing flexibility/athletic ability.

Kathryn & Legacy - Viennese Waltz, choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereaux
Legacy cried at the end of the performance. He said he wants to show that there's hope and that anybody can do it and he felt the routine represented that and that's why he got emotional. Judges said it was hard to criticize him after him saying such a nice thing. But they did criticize him. Adam said that his technique could use improvement but he did a good job. Mary criticized his technique. She said Kathryn looked and danced beautifully. Nigel said that his technique was not good but he thought Kathryn was beautiful. He said he wasn't sure if they're both safe, yet.

My Thoughts: I loved their connection in this. They're constantly looking into each other's eyes and smiling. I thought Kathryn was great. I agree with the judges that Legacy could use some more work. I don't know about technique but he lacked flow. Also, the part where he lifts her up when the music starts to build up, I think he should have lifted her up longer and have a sharper movement in the lifting motion. I don't know if that was because he was having trouble lifting her or if it was the choreography.

Karen & Victor - Hip-Hop to "Moving Mountains", choreographed by Lauriann Gibson.
Adam thought there was a lot of commitment and intensity. He thought the dancing seemed angrier than the music. But he thought their dancing was great. Mary thought it was OK. He thought there was nothing to latch onto. Nigel didn't feel the chemistry between them, he didn't feel that they had chemistry with the music, he didn't think they were together.

My Thoughts: I didn't like the choreography and unlike last week, with Lauriann's routine, I didn't think it was entertaining. The dancing was just OK.

Mollee & Nathan - Cancan to "Cancan Suite", choreographed by Tyce DiOrio
Adam thought they were the perfect couple to get this routine because they are just bouncing energizer bunnies. He thought it was a good routine for them. Mary thought Mollee was great and was impressed with the control Nathan had in his pirouette. Nigel thought they did it with all the energy that the routine demanded.

My Thoughts: I don't know diddly about Cancan. It was somewhat enjoyable. There was some good dancing in there.

Noelle & Russell - Contemporary to "A Case oF You", choreographed by Tyce DiOrio with Katee Shean assisting.
Adam thought they were gorgeous. The routine had a giant paint palette on the floor and they used it and rub the paint on themselves. Adam said that for choreographers, the dancers are the paint and Tyce did a good job using his paint. Mary enjoyed it. Nigel thought Noelle committed to everything. He thought Russell's technique gets better and better every week.

My Thoughts: It was... OK. Wasn't super impressed with Noelle. I mention Noelle because this is her genre. Russell was decent.

Ashleigh & Jakob - Cha-Cha to "Cha Cha Heels", choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereux.
Adam said this is Ashleigh's world and they're all just visiting. Adam said Jakob made himself look like he's a Ballroom dancer. Adam said they killed it. They're the couple of the night for him. Mary loves Ashleigh's legs and what she does with them. Mary thought Jakob was there for her for all the partner work even if the technique wasn't all there. She thought he did a respectable job.Apparently, Nigel agrees with me and doesn't see the need for stories in all these Ballroom routines. Let's just see good dancing choreography! (that's me saying that) Nigel said that even though there was a story concept, Jean-Marc choreographed a good Cha-Cha routine with a lot of Cha-Cha dancing in it.

My Thoughts: I loved it. Maybe even better than their first routine. I agree that they were the couple of the night. I don't know about technique but I thought Jakob had good movement, so he faked it pretty well.
